Wingfest 2011 will prove to be just as wildly fun (& difficult to get into) as last year if we have anything to do with it. Martha waited till last minute in 2010 and well – not smart, not smart at all.  Sharky’s EDG hosts arguably the reason to hang on the VIneyard till mid-November or rather the reason to travel back to the rockin’ Rock. The wings are bottomless, the beer is cold, and the company is tops.

The Wingfest Grand Prize holds some serious clout – the competitors take the title pretty seriously and let’s be real we all have our favorites.  Best part of wingfest?  The crowd votes…..we, along with every other living breathing person loves who they love and have beef with a few of the others.  WIth that, here are the competitors:

We’re guessing Squibnocket is showing some pretty lil peelers right now with the storm coming – its probably a top 10 surf day.   And if you are total amateur at surfing the waves go for the alt. board sport – SUP. wuzSup Sports can help you get on a board – get out on Senge before the winds start to pick up. You might even land a pre-storm tan – you’ll need it….sun is gonna be in hiding for the next few.

You probably do “need” a lil end of summer gift for being such a “good” kid ha!  Oh, and before you head out for the night make sure to stock up at Your Market for the possible gnarliness that may hit on Saturday…you can never be too “prepared”.

H. Earl was a huge tease last summer around this same time – but like we said earlier….it is cool to be prepared – you never know what may happen.  But being “prepared” can take many forms.  When and if the storm hits break out the Dark & Stormys and toast to the excitement of #IslandLife and #Hurricane Season.  With a D&S in hand start to think back to the time you actually had time to sit down and watch a movie.  Throw in a comedy and chill for a bit.We are thinking Dark & Stormys – Texas Hold ‘em – Movies…bring the Crew over – the more the merrier!

Let’s hope that the forecast is totally totally wrong so that the Supernova Fieldtrip Freedom Cruise on the Seastreak can leave port….it’s a wild time. We’re crossing our fingers.

3. 3-5 of the coolest/funniest people you know on-island – they’ll come in handy around 3pm after all the planned “fun” has been had.

4. Plan a trip – with all the money you saved this summer (yeah right!) – live vicariously through the planning…we’re thinking BVI?!?!?!

5. Call your Mom.  She’s probably worried.  You’ll thank us later.

6. Start cooking a big decadent dinner with tons of wine…you earned it.

7. And…pray 4 sunshine….

…..& the summer goes on….

It’s safe to say – last weekend was epic.  Many would say the last “real summer” weekend.  We don’t agree and we are prepared to prove it. The weather this weekend might be enough to convince all of you who left to turn around and come right back.

A Ben Taylor/John Forte collab is not to be missed. The energy that these guys bring to the stage is unmatched and keeps you wanting more and more and more.  Not only does a Ben Taylor concert bring you up close with a seriously talented musican but it safe to say no one ever knows exactly what or rather who will show up when he takes the stage.  We have a feeling there is some surprises laid out – so – we recommend this as a #mustdo.

The show will benefit the Rockhouse Foundation and the Martha’s Vineyard Animal Shelter. Two organizations doing seriously special stuff for the communities they serve. Show some love and Show Up.

And then, the very next day is the….

This year’s #EndOfSummer Epic Rager will be just that. Epic.  We’ve all been waiting to see all these groups together at once and well the time is here and the door is cheap.  These are a bunch of household names that we have been lovin’ all summer – groups that have become Vineyard Iconic – creating the sound of the music scene on the Rock. Throw in a raffle that benefits the MV Skatepark and you have yourself an evening. We think this night will bid farewell to the classic summer days perfectly…at Nectar’s…with local musicians….benefiting something cool….with all our friends that are just about to leave.  Go Out Big.

Sound familiar? We can’t imagine why. While the culinary scene has expanded quite a bit on the island, the Black Dog has continued to be a favorite of many.

Crab Corn Chowder: Many ‘chowders’ or ‘bisques’ that we’ve tried before have the promise of a particular type of meat, like clams, lobster, etc. But this is one chowder that DOES not fail on this promise. One scoop, and suddenly Martha realizes that rather than a large kernel of corn on our spoon, it’s a chunk of crab meat. And another, and another, and another…

The Galley

Menemsha has seen its fair share of fires in the past few years, and one of those happen to be The Galley in 2007. Fortunately, it was rebuilt and reopened, into the exact same Galley that we all knew and loved. If the Vineyard could do its version of ‘fast-food’ (classy, but quick, and a ton of seafood of course), this establishment would be it.

Fish Filet Sandwich: Living on an island, Martha has tried numerous fish sandwiches, but The Galley’s has to take the cake. The fish tastes fresh and light, and it’s not overly fried (i.e. not drowned in batter), and topped with tartar sauce and lettuce, which ultimately gives you the best fish sandwich you will probably ever have.

Détente

For superb fine-dining in Edgartown, Détente is high on everyone’s list. Tucked away in Nevin Square, it’s an awesome place for intimate dining and special occasions. Want to know its secret? Half-priced food at the bar EVERYDAY on EVERY ITEM from 5:30 to 6:00. But get there early, there’s hardly a dozen seats at the bar and they fill up quick (how could they not, this is seriously one of the best deals ever!).  Jump on this while the peaches are still in season….

Peach Salad: While this item is an addition to their menu, it’s pretty common that it’s one of their specials and thank god for that. The peaches are covered with warm Taleggio cheese. Now you’re thinking, ‘cheese and fruit on together like that, really?’ But take our word for it; the combination will blow you away.

Park Corner Bistro

Transported to Europe whilst in Oak Bluffs, Martha Vineyard? It can happen. With Park Corner Bistro as your enabler of course. Small-plates (i.e. perfect portions) of gourmet fare, that will make anyone’s budget happy. Martha loves going here for an intimate and wonderful dinner in OB.

Truffle Tots: Gnocchi fried with truffle oil. No, you’re not dreaming. While the word ‘tots’ may induce thoughts of the horrific lunch lady hurdling them onto your tray during lunchtime at your elementary school; don’t be frightened. These are tots for grown-ups.

This Sunday Mike Benjamin & The Trio Grande board the Tall Ship Alabama for a sunset concert cruise – and they would love for you to be there.  Bring your  own snacks and drinks and let the Tall Ship Crew do the rest.  If you missed the first two cruises this is your chance to cross off a line on the #MVBucketList.

Over the years Mike Benjamin has played with many renowned artists including Sue Tedeschi, Bo Diddley, The Temptations, Ben E. King, Bob Weir, James Taylor, The David Letterman Band, The Blues Brothers and more. He was also the lead guitarist and singer for the Boston Music Award winning band “Entrain”.  Mike Benjamin is a well-loved musician on the island and can be found performing year round in many of our favorite hot spots.  However, a sunset concert cruise on The Alabama trumps all other venues…Historical tall ship.
