What the _____ is a docusoap? Well, think Laguna Beach, with a few touches of the Hills and well, add some Martha’s Vineyard summer youthful drama and you have the upcoming ABC family release of “The Vineyard”. Being produced by David Broome, who was behind “The biggest loser” and Brian Smith, a mastermind of “MasterChef” we’re pondering how this is going to pan out.

Sources say the show will be a “ a one-hour docusoap following a group of twentysomethings in Martha’s Vineyard during the summer, will launch in the summer“. This should be an interesting addition to the vineyard.

Casting has been in full force and from what WhatsUpMartha has been able to put together, filming is going to be starting in May. Apparently over 500 applications to be in the show have been received. Naturally, this is going to rustle some feathers around the island, and we’d love to hear some feedback!

I think this could really open doors for someone on the vineyard that would never have the opportunity of opening otherwise. That being said, I am afraid that the show will stereotype the locals. Anyone who has lived or lives on the vineyard knows that there is a LARGE variety of personalities on the vineyard... some people that the vineyard public would be proud to be represented by and well... others not so much. Its been widely known that multiple channels have tried in the past few years to get a show going on the vineyard (without success), but it looks like this one is the real deal and I am grateful that it will be an ABC Family program as opposed to MTV or TLC.

What adult beverage is hot and fruity at the same time? A steaming glass of mulled wine of course. This toasty drink with a kick is a great alternative to beer, cider, or hot chocolate. Plus, you can’t beat that a 20-minute cook time! The recipe includes our favorite ingredients like cinnamon, wine, honey, wine, orange zest, and of course, much wine! This modern version even calls for a bit of brandy for extra excitement.

- One bottle red wine (especially: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot)
- One juiced orange add orange zest by shredding peel
- 1/4 cup of brandy
- 1/4 cup of apple cider (optional)
- 8-10 cloves
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 diced green apple
- 1 tsp fresh or 2 tsp ground ginger

Combine all ingredients into a sauce pan and cook on medium heat for 20 minutes or until contents are steaming. Laddle into mugs leaving zest, cloves, and cinnamon sticks behind or use as garnish. Serves 6-8.

Hint: Wine boils faster than water so be careful not to boil the ingredients or most of alcohol will evaporate (not cool)!

Leave it to the Douglas boys. The world’s fastest sailors are pushing the envelope of speed records for a $30,000 purse on the table and it’s been an awesome experience capturing them on camera. This is a relatively new and small niche sport. There are only about 20 people, “speed freaks” as we affectionately call them, in the world and the 12 best are here on the Vineyard until the 31st.

The time of the year is great for the high winds and the location of Martha’s Vineyard is an excellent venue to host the site, not just because it’s an island, but also to shoot them. These speed sailors are screaming along in only 3 inches of very flat water, which is perfect for the camera, because I can get so close to them – inches that is. The closer the better! During one of the practice runs, one of them actually hit my shoulder at 40 knots – a little sore, but still operating just fine.

It’s, shall we say, challenging to capture a moving object at 50 knots, so there are a lot of shots being fired to get the best images. Just to give you an idea, in 4 days I have captured over 2000 images! Since they sail/kite for about 30 miles in a non-stop loop, there are plenty chances to get the best ones. Not to mention the water is not exactly warm – thick wet suit and warm truck needed.

A girl’s relationship to her boots is something bordering on obsession. It’s almost an urban myth in fact because looking from the outside in, not much logic is involved. It’s similar to any fascination someone might have – Why do men love tools? Why are femmes maniacal over their skin care? Why do cars make men drool? Why? Why? Why? (Disclaimer: we understand completely that a number of those statements were harsh generalizations – but c’mon, true or false?).

The interesting thing about the preverbal ‘boot fixation’ is that men share the same mania – no one is exempt here. We might dare to say most men would prefer their ladies to strut in a pair of boots than a pair of heels – a statement that almost reads as insanity. It’s common knowledge and highly accepted among the male population – boots are sexy, end of story.

What a shame it is that we aim to keep words to a minimum – a novel could be written on the allure, history, and sensuality of boots….but we’ll leave you to drool and do your own auxiliary research.

So whatever the logic or lack of logic might be, we know one thing for sure – women covet their boots with a serious love & conviction. And their men covet the opportunity to accompany a boot-owning femme. Boots are to your wardrobe as vermouth is to a martini – necessary for some reason that can’t be pinned down. Timeless, classic, sexy, and so hard to explain. As fall draws close with winter waiting patiently in the wings, we’ve been growing our boot collection – for fashion, function and everything in between. Dig in.

1. “Janessa Leather Riding Boot” | Ralph Lauren

The Age old image of an Equestrian brings great inspiration to so many lines of mens, womens and childrens collections this season. And for that matter – the world surrounding the stable has always been something of a beacon of class, and rustic yet composed style. Enter the Ralph Lauren Riding Boot….we’re in love.

2. “Twin Strap Sheepskin Boot” | Quoddy

Handcrated in Maine with a long standing tradition of delivering the highest quality boots and shoes to markets around the world – right in our backyard. Maybe not an obvious representation of a ‘sexy boot’ but throw these on with skinny Japanese twill pants and a chunky cashmere sweater and some costume jewels – your now dropping jaws. After all, there’s nothing more elegant than a woman who is just perfectly undone.

3. “Paige Wedge X Stitch” | Frye

Wedges win wars. Sultry, functional and full of sass….best part of these, everyday boots. No need to put them aside for a special occasion; they’re designed to be worn day in and day out – you better be single though, you WILL get attention in these.

4. ‘The McKenna Boot” | BOGS

A perfect blend of fashion & function, but no one needs to know that. Tech upper to protect from the elements. Non-slip, non-marking and self-cleaning deep lug outsole for optimal traction, anti-microbial odor protection (gross but amazing), and comfort-rated from temperate to sub-zero conditions. A winter boot to top all winter boots.

5. “Riding Chelsea” | Frye

An inspired Blundstone look with a striking feminine look. The riding boot gets a modern flair with the elastic element – making these boots a safe and stylish option for anyone.

6. “The Jennifer” | Kamik

Not interested in dropping almost $200 on a rubber boot from brands that we don’t need to name? These look almost identical and we love the crest on the side – oh so proper. All the function, a bit more fashion at half the cost. We’d say these are secret of the rain boot loving gaggle of girls out there.

Starting with the most popular cold-weather staple—the jacket. For a stroll on Martha or a trip off-island, a great jacket is the coziest companion a girl could want. They’re practical against chill but as chic as a dress. Sometimes they even pull an entire outfit together. Check out these must-have coat and jacket styles to kick start your autumn adventures.

1. London Fog Trench Jacket

Described as the next best thing to a Burberry trench, the London Fog jacket has the same classic cut and belted silhouette at a fraction of the cost. The light trench is rain resistant and comes in regular and petite sizes for length customization.

2. Neon Buddha Swing Jacket

The love child of a cape jacket and a peacoat, the swing jacket gives off a romantic style with a peter pan collar and flared quarter sleeves. This Neon Buddha fleece swing jacket also previews winter whites in light eggshell. Try a light turtleneck underneath for outdoor activities, but retire during deep winter’s cold temperatures.

3. Top Shop Parka

As temperatures drop, stay sporty-glamourous with a faux fur collar. The parka jacket continues to be on-trend this fall which is great because it is also exceptionally practical. Reviews rave that the large size is perfect to keep cozy throughout the fall and into winter and an elastic waistband gives the right amount of waist definition.

4. Sessun Chera Wool Coat

Summer is over, but if you love colors don’t worry because fall jackets are the best way to add spice to fall hues. Many bold jackets come in bright red, but this eggplant jacket will stand out in a subtle sophisticated way. The minimalist button detail and funnel neckline provide a unique upscale look.

5. Steve Madden Cape Jacket

This fall, try a jacket you can literally throw on. Cape jackets exploded this season with variations of Count Dracula’s famous loose cover-up. If you prefer not to loose your shape, Steve Madden’s tweed cape also includes an elastic waist band, pockets, and flowing sleeves for a great take on effortless style.

It’s been a long time coming. For a few seasons, um years now, we’ve all been strolling down Main Street in Vineyard Haven, peering through the windows of the awaited Cafe Moxie and thinking ” When the hell can we get in there to eat and drink?”. As of merely what’s been only hours now, the doors of Cafe Moxie are officially open and damn it feels good.

Now we know the first question. Did they put in the application for a booze license? You bet they did. In fact, they put in for a year-round beer and wine license and that glorious paperwork has seen thumbs up from the Tisbury selectmen and sent onward to the Massachusetts Alcohol brigade. We have good feelings the right people are talking.

Total time it look to resurrect this gem? Just about 4 years. So you can imagine that we’ve all got a lot of catching up to do. Lucky for you – Cafe Moxie is going for a 7 days a week approach and serving up three key meals a day of greatness. With hours from 7am to 10pm you’re likely not going to miss out on this party.

What’s for Lunch you say? The Club Moxie Sandwich of course. Heralding house roasted turkey breast, apple wood smoked bacon, and island grown local heirloom tomatoes; you’re not denying this. For a smooth $12 the price is right as it comes with a choice of Pomme Frittes or mesclun salad. Dig in. What’s your favorite Moxie memory? Comment below.

It’s certainly Fall on the vineyard. Sunrise is at 6.55am these days and the reality of sunset at 6pm is sure to start creeping towards 5pm as the season goes into Winter. Luckily, the vineyard has been able to welcome a new addition to the escape reality movement. This long awaited addition is of course, 11 North.

Watching the transformation from David Ryan’s to this new structure inside has been something of interest all summer. For all of our DR fans out there, we all have some well, interesting memories of DR antics. Despite the fact that you’re probably reading this at 10am on a Monday, you can all be sure to think about pouring out a bit of your late day hooch for the former David Ryan’s. Just a few drops will do.

With a totally reworked interior you’re in for a treat. The stairway was completely changed and the whole downstairs has a nice open vibe that you’re going to totally dig. A massive chalkboard with which we’re mildly obsessed with displays the bi-valves you’re about to shuck around with and the stacked list of brews and wine that will thereafter follow. Hands down, we’re sold on this concept.

In terms of the food, we’re going to direct you towards the local fried oysters served up real mean. Flash fried to a delicate crisp, and served within oyster shells, you’re in for a treat. 5 of these local oysters end up on the plate. 11 North is going for a year-round attack so be on the lookout when you’re making a mainland escape or looking to change up your day to day off-season routine.

We’re on a collaboration binge as of lately and we’re happy to keep you in the loop on what we’re loving. With two brands that are always on the cusp of traditional and cutting edge - Pendleton USA + Best Made Co. have us in love with blankets all over again. With a Vermont winter soon before us and signs of it already peaking through the clouds, we’re beginning the search for all necessary products for a grizzly winter we can’t wait for.

This blanket isn’t just some nonsense maneuver. Take that space blanket you keep in your car and throw it out. It’s pointless when you have a Lumberland blanket in your possession. Made of domestic wool, this baby is blended with just a tad of cotton for a soft to the hand feel and for optimal snuggleness. Yes that is a word. Add a whipstitched top and bottom and this blanket is not coming apart no matter what you throw at it. For the die hard camper in you, or for the lover of all things practical and portable, Best Made has included a leather blanket sling with each purchase so you’re all set to hitch hike from mountain to mountain.

Best Made Co | Cost $180 | @BestMadeCo | Made in Oregon
