Well, it all started with two brothers, who, in 1998 decided it was time to leave the corporate world and live a life where a living was made, off of not wearing ties but instead, making ties. Go figure right? After pushing ties on the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard and realizing their dreams were possible, Shep & Ian of Vineyard Vines have transformed their vision into an iconic brand, message and by all means a tremendous company. What matters most are the values they have instilled in both the brand, and their interaction with fans and the locations their stores have gone to. The Edgartown store is special, so we’re highly encouraging you to take a wander over to 19 Winter Street and spend some time with the Whale. There’s an incredible staff eager to Whalecome you to what we’ve all come to love: The Good Life. So grab a tie, snag a shirt, or just plain stop in to say hi. Either way, you’re leaving with a smile. They wouldn’t have it any other way.

BeetleBung Dry Goods

Wait. There’s more bung to this beetle? Yup. What began as a relaxed and vibe filled coffee house eventually led to what the owners soon realized, they needed to extend this lifestyle and well, island culture straight to cotton. What happened next has been a tremendous organic growth of three stores, touching different areas of Martha’s Vineyard and still to this day, offering new colorful artwork, high quality merchandise and a brand message that is hard to ignore. You’ve seen those abstract ink blots of crabs, lobsters, and the occasional bluefish, but what might be seen as a t shirt company, has blossomed into a line for women adorned with the various pieces of Beetlebung artwork and of course, a jelly fish here or there. The stores are decorated with by all means an island vibe and the staff alone, make the trip far worth it. Martha, has always bunged a few beetle shirts and if anything, give it a shot, stop by, and well, stroll into one of their shops.

Pandora’s Box

Ladies, we know, sometimes we just have to go a little bit farther, and a little bit deeper off the beaten path to find that dress or clothing that really makes us feel special. Well, there’s a place you need to know about if you’re ever wandering through the streets of Menemsha. Located at the top of Basin Road, Pandora’s Box is filled with designer fashions right on to some relaxed, soothing summer wear that will be decadent on a night out or simply glamorous whatever time or event you partake in. The colors are vibrant and the staff are outstanding and there’s little reason to leave without a bag in hand. You can find Martha here often as well, we suppose it’s time to let our one of her little secrets on how she looks so damn good all the time. She wants you to simply know that if you’re in Pandora’s Box with her, you’re certainly a classy, but knows how to have fun sort of gal like her. Enjoy!

Above Ground Records

Nestled nicely in the at times infamous “triangle shopping center” of Edgartown lives a very notorious and incredible record shop that Martha has come to love over the years. What are we talking about? Above Ground Records of course. Whether you’re new to the island or a seasoned resident, Above Ground Records can be summed up in a few simple words, perhaps: The Real Deal. If you’re wondering why there’s all these stickers on bumpers that looks like this [*a] then you’re actually staring at the logo of above ground records. Known for their insanely large used section of music and records you can find it all from blank cdr and dvds and music right on down to the incredible staff that keeps this place rocking.

Right off the bat, this is a spot where Martha frequents often. The entire store offers items for $25 or less and packed chock full of some of the latest fashion trends and colors priced just right for all the beautiful ladies of Martha’s Vineyard to check out and wear. The store is color coordinated with items such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, hair bands, hand bags, watches, hats and so much more. Try and get their early, late or whenever there isn’t a HUGE amount of women inside or the occasional boyfriend/fiance/husband awkwardly holding a handbag and trying not to act like it’s his. It’s a very popular place so get ready to get in, pick your items out and wear them often. If you spot Martha inside, be sure to say hi.

Summer Shades

We hope you don’t lose your shades this Summer and if you do..we won’t ask how, but there’s a place if need be that will keep you covered all Summer long. Down on lower Main Street in Edgartown has been the primetime spot for snagging up a pair of fresh sunglasses that will keep the sun rays out and your style down pat. Every Summer, Summer Shades opens the doors to let you peruse and purchase the newest styles from Oakley to Ray Ban right on down to Chanel. It’s all there, sitting on nice little shelves for you to toss on and rock out. The sales staff is incredibly helpful and they’re going to make sure you leave with a smile on your face and the right lenses doing the job. We often see Martha in there, pulling off some wild look and it’s a no brainer she loves her Burberry frames.

Corner 5 Surf Shop

Corner Five (5) however you want to spell it out, has been dishing out some great surf gear and accessories since 2004. Originally housed next door to the Black Dog (Guess the connection?) in Vineyard Haven, these guys have branched out to just set up a new location on the infamous Circuit Avenue, in Oak Bluffs. You can check out their Toyota Tundra decked out with logo and monster tires cruising around the island, chasing down some fine kite surfing spots or simply taking it all in. They have surfboards for sale, rental and more clothing than you can imagine blazed with their signature logo. Stop by, see what you like and catch a wave.

The Green Room

The Green Room is nestled in on Main Street Vineyard Haven. Originally started as a surf shop to offer some fine threads to the local scene, it has expanded into a range of clothing that will keep you looking legit all Summer long. There’s two floors to peruse through and plenty of gear on the racks to get you ready for a big 2009 season. You can find items ranging from designer denim to swim wear and board shorts from the best brands out there. It’s a great spot to swing through, the staff are awesome and you’ll walk out smiling. We’ve been happy to see the store grow over the years and it’s surely there to stay.

The Boneyard Surf Shop

It was a few years ago, but believe it or not, Martha’s Vineyard was lacking on the whole surf shop scene. Those beautiful crescent waves crashing on the shores were being ridden by a few, but without a direct spot to pick up gear and what not, it was a harsh existence. Then came about the launching and success of The Boneyard Surf shop. There’s a lot of places that say they’re a surf shop, but we’ve found The Boneyard to be the premier spot to get your surf threads, be it casual or performance and even pick up a board to float out on the water and tear into some waves. Check these guys out and we’re pretty sure you won’t be disappointed.
